The monolithic integrated circuit placed the previously separated transistors, resistors, capacitors and all the connecting wiring onto a single crystal (or 'chip') made of semiconductor material. The forty-year-old project [ERMA], provided a vision of what business could expect from the application of data-processing machines, and illustrates how and why some of the key capabilities were invented. A programming language that was closer in appearance to human language, which is the definition of a high level language, other high language programs include Ada, Algol, BASIC, COBOL, C, C++, LISP, Pascal, and Prolog. By 1946, a winner in the data-storage game emerged that would dominate the computer field for the next several years. The year 1953 saw the development of IBM's 701 EDPM, which, according to IBM, was the first commercially successful general-purpose computer.
